ultimate plot twist: Queen by candlelight

In the summer of 2023, David stumbled across an event for Queen by Candlelight. Knowing Queen is one of my favorite bands, he jumped on the tickets faster than you can say “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This was to be our first public indoor event since the pandemic began. David was making a huge deal about it, so I figured something major was up. He suggested I treat myself to a manicure and a new dress since I’d lost a bunch of weight and nothing fit “just right.”

Cue my spidey sense: something big was definitely afoot.

As the event drew closer, he kept reminding me not to mess up my nails. Naturally, I decided to ditch the orange in my hair because if a proposal was happening, I didn’t want to be immortalized in photos with hair clashing with my dress!

The day of the event arrived. I’m all dolled up, wearing my grandmother’s pearls, feeling fancy. The quartet takes the stage, and with every song, I’m thinking, “This is it,” “Okay, no, this is it.” But then the concert ends.

David asks if I enjoyed myself and if I’m ready to go home. I ask if we’re doing anything else, and he says, “We can pick up drive-thru on the way home.” Romantic, right?

I muster up the courage and tell him, “Promise you won’t be upset, but I thought you were going to propose.” He looks genuinely surprised and asks why I thought that. I rattle off my reasons, expecting him to laugh.

His first concern? Whether I’m upset.
I reassure him, “No, I’m not upset, but this is going to make for one hilarious story.”
