Sisters from First Grade On
We’ve been friends since the first day of first grade, in Mrs. Etchison’s class. Other kids would come up, and ask “Are you sister’s?” We’d spend summers, swimming in her pool, and Grandma would call us her little hop toads, as we bounced around the shallow end. After, the forth grade, Laurie moved to Broken Arrow. We stayed friends, and after we were able and to drive, it was on to new adventures. Fun times at May fest, thrift store shopping, “making friends”,as we called it (we would drive past people, we didn’t know, and honk and all of us would wave excitedly, as if we knew them.) We had the best sleepovers. My first introduction to Thai food was during one of these, from Cookie’s catering. We always had a blast with our friends, whether it was in Broken Arrow or Morris.
Communication is key. Compromise and forgiveness will go along way. Finding time as a couple to do things you both enjoy, as much as possible. Enjoy the little things and celebrate the big ones.

Cousins are like peas and carrots
A common phrase I think of, “The cousins in your family are your first friends in life.” Laurie was my first friend ever. Since we were babies, we could be found either at a relative’s house, at an event, or at a lake or park together. If one of us arrived before the other, we would sit and talk with family til the other arrived, then we were awol til dinner. From skipping rocks to discussing what we thought were key points in life. Even though we didn’t agree on everything, we always listened and respected each other’s opinion. We always learned from each other, supported each other, forced the creative mind of another and above all, loved one another. One thing has changed since we were kids and now adults….we’ve aged. Laurie will always be one of my favorite people, my first friend.
Always be forward and honest. Have those uncomfortable conversations. Make time for each other. Never stop dating. Be silly. Be the Laurie and David you are now, 5 10 15 years down the road. Love one another with everything that you are, genuinely.
